Government of Canada three-month Treasury bills are debt instruments issued by the federal government with three months to maturity at the date of issuance. These instruments offer a high level of safety of principal and interest and typically are liquid investments as there is a well established secondary market. They are sold at a discount to the face value, and the difference between purchase price and value on redemption is the investor’s return.

The DEX Universe Bond Index is designed to be a broad measure of the Canadian investment-grade fixed income market. Returns are calculated daily, and are weighted by market capitalization, so that the return on a bond influences the return on the index in proportion to the bond's market value. The Universe Index has been published since 1979. It is intended to be a transparent index, with individual security holdings disclosed electronically each day.
